Bonsai prices - Bonsai EmpireEnterBonsai pricesBonsai are living works of art, some famous trees are hundreds of years old. These trees are invaluable and when sold, very expensive. But at the same time, we can also buy Bonsai in a local garden center, for a few dollars. How do you put a price tag on a bonsai? What are they worth, what price makes sense for an individual tree? In this article we investigate the variables that are important and we observe some examples of Bonsai for sale. The price of a Bonsai tree; what to see Bonsai tree prices tend to vary widely from shop to shop and from country to country. Cheap trees (approximately $20) are available in garden centres around the world, but the availability of higher-quality trees is much more limited. And the trees of the highest quality (many old trees that have been kept for generations, often in Japan) are very rare. With strict import restrictions, the flow of these quality trees from Japan to the United States and Europe is limited. Most of the tree species need to be uprooted and quarantine for months (even years). Naked root is a high risk for old trees, only few species of trees can stand this. Simple economy; with limited availability, prices rise. But we're going to focus on cheap and medium-quality material. The price of a Bonsai depends on several factors, the age and the most remarkable design. How much is a Bonsai tree? Age and historyThe trees of the Bonsai are often regarded as old, expensive and impossible to keep alive. Simplifying things a little, we can say that the more mature you see a Bonsai, the higher your price. The most expensive trees we know (see the images below) are all old and have been kept in pots for generations. Design and engraving of the trunkMost of Bonsai's cheap trees are grown in China. Here they are grown from cuts to plants up to 6 feet (2m) high, in just 3-5 years. When the trunks have thickened enough the high plant of 6 feet (2m) is cut only a few centimeters, after which it is spent another year to allow the tree to grow some new branches. Letting a tree grow tall and then cut it is the quick way to get a thick trunk, but obviously, the scar will always be visible. The trunk will also not have adhesive tape. Bonsai's price depends a lot on how long you spend on that specific tree. The fast way to grow Bonsai is cheap, but the result is not attractive. The combination of a thick trunk with adhesive tape is expensive, as it requires a lot more time to grow. Conclusion: a thick trunk, with attractive adhesive tape, can only be achieved during many years of work. So, it's expensive. Pot & tree speciesBonsai pots come in many prices and this depends to a great extent on their age. Old pots from China and Japan can cost thousands of dollars, if they would be on sale. New factory made Chinese pots costs less than a dollar. New prices, but handmade, pots vary widely. Finally, some species of trees are rare or more difficult to grow, and therefore more expensive. Bonsai trees and their selling price in Bonsai prices examples, from price to cheap How much does a Bonsai tree cost? The most expensive Bonsai tree is this centennial Pine, sold for 1.3 million dollars at the Bonsai International Convention in Takamatsu, Japan. No price... A remarkable tree that is well known for its extremely high age; the tree is said to be over 800 years old. Not for sale, and it will never be. This tree has been trained in a Bonsai for almost 400 years, the result of 6 generations of hard work and patience for the Yamaki family. But what makes it really special is that it was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb fell in 1945; the tree survived and was subsequently donated to the Bonosai & Penjing National Museum in Washington (Image courtesy also by the museum). Still an expensive, but much more affordable than the previous examples. This one was for sale at about $90,000. The tree is old and has a spectacular trunk, which explains why it is so expensive.
